Don’t miss these auctions!

Hello…these auctions have ended so I am altering this post to reflect that.  I have attached some thumbnails of the cards instead of a link to the auctions.  I hope you all were able to get something here!

_____

NT0541Howdy folks!  I hope you are enjoying a nice Saturday afternoon or evening!

I wanted to quickly take a moment to point out some auctions that are closing soon on eBay that you may not want to miss.  All of the postcards are from a single seller and are reasonably uncommon…even rare, and one or two of them are presently “screaming” deals.  Whether they continue to be that way, we’ll have to wait and see…but I wanted to point them out none-the-less.

NT0540As you can see, these are some pretty great cards!   We’ve got NT0536, NT0540, NT0541, NT0594, and the NT no number Carnation Menu.  The seller also has a number of pre-opening Walt Disney World cards that are still really cheap.  If you don’t have those and are interested, $1.99 is a great price (again…these will likely go higher, but anything under $10 is, in my humble opinion, an OK deal for those cards).

On another subject, I plan on featuring a Chernabog card in my next NT0594post.  Fantasia had such a huge influence on me as a kid…I thought it might be fun to tell that story!

Until next time…

Peter Lorre and “Monsters of the Deep”

Ok, so this has absolutely nothing to do with postcards, but it has everything to do with a great Disney film!  I saw this last night and had to share it with you.  Peter Lorre is, well, Peter Lorre!  That guy was unique.  And Kirk Douglas…it’s really cool to see him in his prime.

Anyway…until next time…enjoy!

Bang for the Buck

I suspect most of my readers are aware of the folder that I am featuring here today.  It appears online every now and then and usually sells for a reasonable price.  But, I wanted to record this post “for the record” so that any new collector stumbling on the blog will understand the value that this folder represents.

Pano_Folder

The bottom line is simple.  This folder reprints all of the panorama cards from NT0470 thru NT0482.  One could go out and get the individual cards (if you can find them), or you can get this folder and use the savings to spend several days (!) at Disneyland.  Ideally you would do both!  But…that’s between you and your pocketbook!

Oh, one more thing to keep in mind.  There is a variant of this folder…it has a 6¢ symbol in the stamp box and a 25¢ price printed on it.  Click here to see a picture of that.

What’s my favorite image of the bunch?  Hard to say…but the Tomorrowland shot is pretty cool.  And there is one of those available for sale right now…check out that here.

Until next time…

P.S.  I have created a new page on the blog that will feature other non-postcard related Disney stuff that I thought my readers might be interested in.  This blog will remain dedicated to the postcards of the parks, but I might throw in a few blogs on other stuff every now and then.  You can click here to see that…or just click the link in the menu bar above.

Do-It-Yourself Black & White Cards

NT0344_BW By now you have seen that there is an NT0088 card up for auction on eBay.  This is the third card of the five card black and white set that has been offered by the seller over the last few weeks.  The other two will be coming in the following weeks, based on what the seller has communicated to me.  There isn’t much more to say about these cards than what has already been said, but the auctions have gotten me thinking.  What color postcards out there would work well in black and white?

I think the answer to that question is…many!  I decided to pull a card similar to NT0088 and give my theory a try.  This is NT0344 – DOWN THE GREAT “RIVERS OF AMERICA”.  I saved it in black and white and NT0344_Sepiasepia tone.  I really like the sepia one.  What do you think?

Other than this card, I think a lot of the Jungle Cruise and Main Street cards would look great in black and white or sepia.  I am specifically thinking that NT0120 – INTERIOR OF SWIFT MARKET HOUSE MAIN STREET, DISNEYLAND, U.S.A. would be great.  Send me your ideas, and I will post them up on the site!

Until next time…

World Showcase at EPCOT

EP_0100-50106EP_0100-50106_0001Recently my blog has been a bit “Disneyland” centric. Sure, Disneyland was the first park to be constructed…and certainly has some of the most interesting early cards…but the other parks have great sets of cards too. And that brings me to today’s blog.

I have, sadly, only been to WDW on one occasion as an adult. It was a few years ago with my extended family for the Thanksgiving holiday week. It was crowded as a result of the timing, but we had a great time exploring all of the properties in Florida. Of all the properties there, I think my favorite is EPCOT.  Looking back…I was most impressed by the World Showcase. It was an opportunity for Disney Imagineers to demonstrate their uncanny ability to research an architectural style, recreate it, and blend it with other styles in a small area. It is brilliantly done, and I am looking forward to my next visit (maybe next year…we’ll see).

Anyway, this particular card (0100-50106) shows the United Kingdom area at EPCOT. We get a thatched roof cottage, a castle reminiscent of Balmoral Castle, another structure after St. James Palace (not visible in this card) a typical exposed beam cottage and a few other styles (I am no historian of architecture…this is just what I see at a glance!) But it is a well put together scene…something that is a pleasure to walk into and through.

I will try to feature cards from the other parks more frequently. Lord knows there are enough cards and topics from all the parks to keep me engaged for some time to come! I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I do.

Until next time…

P.S. Note that there is another black and white card up for auction this week…see the auctions at right. NT088 – The Mark Twain was just listed today and will run for seven days. The Jungle Cruise card, NT0087, closed today and got $429…amazing!

P.P.S. For other EPCOT cards online…check out these auctions.

Black and White Walt Disney card set(s)

Walt_100th

Walt in Front of the Stagecoach

I have always been under the impression that there was only one black and white set of cards that were published with vintage images of Walt Disney on them.  This would be the set commemorating Walt’s 100th Birthday (one of the cards pictured at right).  But tonight, I came across another set of eight cards (where some of the images are the same as the birthday set) that was also produced around 2001.  This new-to-me set was released as part of the Disney “Family Reunion” that took place during an “official” Disneyana convention in 2001.

The cards in this set each have a golden Mickey seal on them and come in a velum folder.  The set is available online right now, here.  Perhaps I have had my head in the sand on this, but it is the first I have heard of this set.

Getting either the birthday set or this “Family Reunion” set complete is not trivial.  You probably won’t have to pay a ton to get them, but they do not seem to come up very often as complete sets.  The cards in the 100th birthday set are often available as singles though.

Until next time…

P.S.  You’ll note I have the jumbo Fantasyland card featured at right.  There is actually another one available online right now as well.  That is unusual, and it affords the collector an opportunity to get a great deal.

NT0087 – Another Jewel

NT0087In my last post, I featured the NT0089 black and white card that was for sale online.  Well, in the interest of equal treatment, I had to give this card the same billing!  This is NT0087 – The Jungle Cruise…and it’s being sold by the same seller who sold the NT0089 card.  I was actually in touch with him about using his images in my posts (he gave me permission), and he said he will be offering the full set, one card a week, for the next few weeks.

Is this card awesome…or what?!?!  The black and white does so much to lend an atmosphere of adventure to the scene.  It is reminiscent of  The African Queen!  I almost expect to zoom in on the card and see Bogart and Hepburn on the boat!  And this is one that I do not think I have ever seen for sale online.  Sure…I probably missed it once or twice, but I have scene a couple of the Rocket to the Moon, and a couple castle cards…but not this one.

African_QueenAs a quick aside…the Nickel Tour really has very little to say about the cards.  Just that they were published in Germany on photo paper.  One does wonder how many of them are out there, but the NT says that they are probably the rarest cards of all.

So..expect at least three more posts going forward on the remainder of the set.  If you are looking to build a great foundation for your collection…now is the time!

Oh…one more thing…you’ll note that I have put a selection of interesting auctions over on the right side-bar.  This is my attempt to keep you…my loyal readers…abreast of the happenings on eBay (I may eventually add some delcampe.fr or other auction sites as listings merit).  I will refresh this as auctions end and begin.  Hopefully, you will find this useful.

Until next time…

P.S.  That’s the cover to my Modern Library edition of the African Queen.  Warning…collecting Modern Library books with dust-jackets can be addicting!

Rare Black and White Sleeping Beauty Castle, NT0089, on eBay

Hello everyone!

NT0089

NT0089 – Sleeping Beauty’s Castle

I mentioned this card as an afterthought on my last post, but figured it really needed to be highlighted in its own post given the rarity of the card.  So, if you have not already taken notice of this black and white castle card, NT0089, then give it a look because you probably won’t see another for a while.  The card has a bit of a bow to it, but is otherwise in pretty good shape.  Bidding is already up to $136…and the auction ends in less than 24 hours.

In the time that I have been collecting I think I have seen all five cards in this series come up for auction at least once, but not more than two or three times.  Recently, in a conversation with someone who would know (you know who you are), I was told that this card (and the four others in the set) are likely more rare than the Silver Banjo card.

In other news, in case you missed it, we did have a contest winner for Contest #1!  I will blog more specifically on this next time…so stay tuned for that.  The next contest will be a little more difficult I think, and also offer a “grander” prize!

Until next time…

The African Veldt – NT #’s 0306, 0696, 0697, 0816 and 0922

NT0306Ok…this is a bit of a “technical” (aka nerdy) post because it dwells on some details that are perhaps of no of interest to most collectors, but which apply to a lot of Disneyland postcards.  This topic can also help the new collector understand one of the more important aspects of the hobby…namely, that you can have a complete collection of the images produced, NT0697without having a complete collection of the cards themselves.

We will use the “African Veldt” cards as an example.  The African Veldt is part of the Jungle Cruise in Adventureland.  It shows some zebra, giraffe, gnus, and the like roaming around in a field of bushes and rocks (…in Anaheim).  Card NT0306 (pictured at top right) is the first time we see this image.  In the background you can see some lions eating a dead Zebra, and even some hyena if you look closely.  The image is reproduced in NT0696…but is cropped and taken from a slightly different angle for NT0697 (pictured below right).  The lions are out of the picture as well as the hyenas.  For NT0816 and NT0922 we get the same image on front with minor textual variations on the back.

So what’s the point?  It is this…that you can create a great collection of cards without getting anywhere near all of the NT numbers.  If you are a completest geek…like me(!) then you will tend to go for the moon and get them all.  But if you aren’t “touched” by that problem, you can put a really nice collection of images together that captures the full essence of this hobby without having to get every card.  In this case…images on NT0696, NT0816 and NT0922 are superfluous.

This might be an obvious point to the more advanced collector…but if you are new to this hobby…keep this point in mind.  It could save you a fair bit of time, money and sanity(!) if you chose to go this route.

Until next time…

P.S.  There is still a a little less than two days left on this black and white castle card, NT0089.  Don’t miss it…you almost never see these cards up for auction!

Announcing Contest #1!

Contest_1I had this idea the other day that I thought would be sort of fun.  The idea is to show a small excerpt from a Disney related postcard and offer a small prize to the first person who can identify which card the excerpt comes from.  Fun for the whole family!!  So, without further ado…check out Contest #1 in the menu bar above!

Depending on how this goes, I am thinking I will post a contest every couple weeks or so to challenge the knowledge of all of you out there.  I am starting with what I think is a fairly easy contest related to this image here.  But…stuff is always obvious when you already know the answer.  Prove your knowledge and be the first to answer!

Until next time…
