Tokyo Disneyland – Diamond Horseshoe Revue!

As promised, I have come back tonight for a post on the Tokyo Disneyland cards that I recently picked up.  I have been slowly looking through these beautiful cards, one by one.  They are a real treat and make me want to hop on a plane and go to Japan!

TD-0101-0022Tokyo Disneyland opened in April, 1983, and the cards I recently picked up are all from that first year.  While I cannot personally say whether these cards were on the rack the day the park opened…I suspect they were not since many of the them show guests milling about the various attractions in the park.  For this post, I thought I would look at one particular card…The Diamond Horseshoe Revue!

The Diamond Horseshoe Revue is in Westernland – the Tokyo Disneyland equivalent of Frontierland at Disneyland.  Here you will find several attractions that you might expect – Big Thunder Mountain, the Mark Twain riverboat, a shooting gallery, even the Country Bear Theatre!  At Slue Foot Sue’s Diamond Horseshoe…you will find the Diamond Horseshoe Revue – a lively can-can show in the spirit of the show at Disneyland.

NT0070Taking a look at the card, I cannot help but be reminded of NT0070, pictured here.  It’s the same thing, only 28 years earlier in Anaheim!  I doubt there were any Japanese girls dancing the can-can at Disneyland in 1955 though.  But the Tokyo card is a testament to the coming together of two cultures that were at war only 38 years before the opening of the Tokyo park.  For that reason…this card puts a smile on my face!

Until next time…

Nickel Tour Book For Sale

Hi folks!

Nickel_TourI suspect most of you reading this blog already have a copy of the Nickel Tour, but I saw this signed first edition Nickel Tour on eBay this morning and thought I would point it out.  Recently, there haven’t been that many of these on eBay, so if you are looking for one, this might represent a good opportunity.  (There are quite a few on Amazon right now, with the asking prices all well above $200).

Anyway…that’s all I had for the moment.  I do plan on coming back today and posting on some cool cards I picked up recently from the Tokyo Disneyland Resort!

Until next time…

P.S.  Note…the first edition has a red cover, unlike the one shown here.

Check out these lots if you get a chance…as of right now there are still a few bargains to be had.  That NT 0473 Frontierland Stagecoach panorama card is not something that you see very often.

Good Luck!

EPCOT – The Living Seas

EP-0100-50072Tonight I have been struggling with a bit of a “writer’s block”.  Whenever I land in this predicament, the solution is actually pretty straight forward…reach into a random pile of cards, pull something out and start writing!!

The winner of the lottery tonight was this pre-opening EPCOT card for “UNDERSEA ADVENTURE – The Living Seas”.  This is a pre-opening day card for EPCOT, and as such, it has some text in bold on the back indicating that “The Future Begins October 1, 1982“.  The card sort of implies that the Living Seas are part of the EPCOT opening day event, but in reality, this attraction did not open until 1986.  After approximately twenty years in operation it was “rebranded” as “The Seas With Nemo and Friends”.  Many of the original attributes of the attraction were removed to accommodate this change in branding.  For more…check out Lost EPCOT.

EP-0100-50072_0001Regardless of the history…this is a great artists concept card that was ultimately for sale as a regular card.  There exists a version of this card which is identical to the one shown here, but without the extra text, “The Future Begins October 1, 1982”, printed on the back.

Until next time…

P.S.  You may have seen a D-131 Art Corner card (NT0122) go for $256 on eBay today.  That is a pretty remarkable price for that card.  Just last year I picked up my copy for ~$80.  And in the interest of full disclosure…the sale that ended today was also mine.  It was a duplicate that I picked up a number of months back.

Disneyland Paris Pre-Opening Art Cards

A quick addendum to this post – If you are interested in getting your own copy of this set, I know someone who has several copies that are for sale.  Let me know and I will pass along contact info.

Euro_DisneySeveral, if not all, of the Disney parks have had pre-opening day publicity in the form of a postcard or set of postcards.  Starting with Disneyland itself back in 1955 which published a set of 23 cards prior to the opening of the park, Walt Disney World, EPCOT, Tokyo Disneyland, and Euro Disney have all followed with pre-opening day post card sets of their own.  (I can’t speak directly to cards from the other properties because I have not seen them…but I have to believe they exist).  Today,  I wanted to briefly touch on the Euro Disney pre-opening day postcard set.

Euro_Disney_0002The set consists of 12 cards and was sold at the preview center that was constructed in Marne-la-Vallée, France prior to the opening of the park on April 12, 1992.  The preview center opened in 1990 and was a popular place to visit prior to the park opening.  Check out this site to get a good flavor of what you would have seen if you visited the Euro Disney preview center.

The art work is, as you might expect, fantastic.  The “future past” of Tomorrowland, the whimsy of Frontierland, and the “Hello Dolly” look of Main Street are all really well done.  As I said…there are twelve cards in the set numbered 1 through 12 on the back.  Card number 1 has a bar code number of 00100 00096.  The numbers don’t exactly progress incrementally from there, but nearly so.  I do not have the cards up in the database yet, but I will soon, so you can check them out there.

Euro_Disney_0001I have only been to Disneyland Paris once, and that was back in 1999.  I find it rather interesting that they changed the name to “Disneyland Paris” in 1995.  They claim that it was because the Europeans associate with the term “Euro” differently than Americans do (this according to a Michael Eisner quote on Wikipedia).  Perhaps, though, they have long term plans for another park in Europe?!?!

Until next time…

P.S.  If you know anyone headed to Shanghai (maybe you are going yourself), be sure to ask them to keep an eye out for pre-opening day cards of Disneyland Shanghai!

NT0599 Die-Cut on eBay – This is a super rare card!

This is a super quick post to let you all know about an NT0599 card up for sale on eBay that is closing soon.

NT0599

I have been collecting Disney postcards for quite some time, and I do not recall ever seeing this for sale online before.  It’s entirely likely that one, or all three, of the die-cuts have been auctioned before, but I missed it if they were.  The Die-Cut cards were all offered in the park in 1955 and 1956.  According to the Nickel Tour, they were sold at the Art Corner as well as the Main Street Gift Shop.

Anyway…the card is already getting $370 and will likely go a little higher.  But if you are interested check it out!

Until next time…

Some Great Auctions Ending Tomorrow – Including an Animated NT0576!

NT0603_adjusted_3Hello there everyone!

I have to apologize up front as I have been spending most of my time this week working on my Comics and CGC Data blog.  If you have any interest in vintage comic books…check it out!  I am actually planning a post of Walt Disney Comics & Stories in the not too distant future.  I will be sure to let you know when that is up on the blog!

NT0576I wanted to alert you all to some good cards that are about to close on eBay over the next day or so.  One card in particular, NT0576 (at right), is a rather rare card.  I don’t think I have seen one of these for sale online before…but I might be mistaken.  This card, not unlike the other “flicker” cards, were all manufactured by Pictorial Publications, “A-Vari-Vue Card” according NT0589to the Nickel Tour.  This card is one of two jumbo Vari-Vue cards.

Another card is NT0603, which was also up a few weeks ago.  I am not sure if the seller upgraded his copy and is now selling thi sone, or what.  Either way, this is another opportunity to get this very rare card.

So without further ado, here is a list of what is coming up tomorrow:

I will be back in the next couple of days with more non-auction related info, but I did not want these auctions to go by without giving a heads up to my readers.

Until next time…

A Few Jumbos Ending Tomorrow!

Hi Folks!

I didn’t want to let this pass by without alerting you.  There is a seller on eBay right now offering four different jumbo cards for sale…cards that you don’t see that often.  I am actually going to bid on a couple of them myself…so keep that in mind!

The cards are:

That last one is a little beat up…so make sure you take a close look at the scan.

Anyway…that’s it for now!

Until next time…

Chernabog…and a Milestone!

I said I was going to post on Chernabog in my next post, and I want to make good on that promise.  But, I also wanted to note a milestone that has been reached as well.  So…off we go!

When I was in the seventh grade, my parents bought me a copy if the Fantasia soundtrack. The 1940 classic had been re-released sometime that year, and I had seen it in the theatre…a few times if I recall correctly. The movie is epic. Most memorable to me were three parts; the Night On Bald Mountain/Ave Maria adaptation, the remarkable adaptation of Stravinsky’s Right of Spring, and the wonderful and whimsical adaptation of Beethoven’s sixth symphony.  I had previously seen silent scenes from the Right of Spring off of a film roll at my elementary school.  At the time, I didn’t realize that the film clip of the dinosaurs fighting had been done by the Disney Studios…I just loved watching the Tyrannosaurus-Rex and the Stegosaur duke it out!

The end of the show has Chernabog as the evil, devilish winged creature residing over (and controlling?) the frantic dances of his macabre acolytes.  Really something…and brilliantly matched to the music of Mussorgsky.  This was a a far cry from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

NT1833Postcard-wise…there are only a couple Chernabog cards…one of which has an interesting little bonus.  In NT1833, their is a grouping of Villains in the card with Chernabog in the back…but in a less menacing form.  If this were for real, I suspect all the other villains would be fleeing for their lives!  But the funny part about this card is the added “zombie” Mickey Mouse in the lower left of the card.  I had not noticed that before until I happened to pull the card out of my collection the other day.  I wonder who’s idea that was?!?

Chernabog can also be found in NT1717.

Finally, for the milestone.  The checklist now has ALL of the cards from the Nickel Tour book entered into it!  That is over 2000 records that can be searched for any text or aspect of the card all the way through NT4041.  Have a card and want to determine the NT#?  That is not hard to do now…just enter a search with info you do have…and the card should show up in the result.  You can also use this tool to track your collection…so let me know if you want to do that.  Going forward, I still need to add a lot of scans and also clean up the appearance of the tool.  I also want to start loading Disneyland and WDW cards that are not in the NT and assign them NT or WDW numbers.  So stay tuned for that…but for now I wanted to make sure I passed along this news!

Until next time…
