A little more about (little) Disneyland Hong Kong

HK Disneyland Main Street (13 May 12)Hello from Hong Kong, where the smallest of the Disney parks (just over 60 acres) sits on an outer island, near the airport, on land reclaimed from the harbour. By introduction, my name is Jim, and I own a website called Global Postcard Sales. I’ve lived here since long before Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005. Todd has asked me to say a few things about their postcards and related topics, and I’m happy to do that.

Not to bore you with history,  but HK already has one huge (and vastly successful) theme park called Ocean Park which opened in 1977.  When Disney announced that it would build here as well, people were thrilled–the next nearest Disney park being in Tokyo, a very expensive and distant trip. So, the Hong Kong Government took a majority share in our local version, and up it went. This is where the story gets interesting.  All of us here were more than a little concerned when word leaked out that another, bigger (read…BIGGER) Disney park was going to be built in Shanghai. That meant that a lot of mainland Chinese families (the target market, after all) collectively said “OK, we can wait,” and didn’t come to the park.  So, it was a tough start at Hong Kong Disneyland, but they have begun to turn the corner.

DHK_00400003439881_coverNow, what about postcards? Disney initially opened retail shops in key locations around Hong Kong, selling the entire range of official merchandise. One by one, these shops closed–due partly to massive rent increases faced by all retailers in the city–and now the situation is this: if someone wants to buy Disney postcards, there are only two places to do it. One, at the park itself. The other, in a shop inside the “sterile area” (after Security and Immigration) in Hong Kong Airport, not even on the main concourse (where it had been initially) but now on a Mezzanine level next to a very busy McDonald’s. Disney postcards are not available at all in any other areas of Hong Kong *unless* some small shop in an arcade is selling unauthorised pirated copies.

The airport shop is often sold out of cards, at least when I have passed through. When they do have one or two varieties–usually of the sort Todd displayed in an earlier post–they are rather inconspicuous on well-hidden racks. Even the staff don’t often know where the cards are. Persistence helps.

DHK_00400002679226BI think one reason their postcards are of such low priority is that they are quite expensive relative to the more durable types of toys children would rather have. But the cards they do have are wonderful, really. They show Disney characters having fun in a variety of iconic local settings, showing our trams, the skyscrapers, and everything about Hong Kong that visitors want to see. But as Todd says, it is something of a treasure hunt to get these cards from outside of Hong Kong, and even here, we must either go to the park or be flying off somewhere, and have the time to divert to that shop, and then they actually need to have some stock.

The photo you see here is one I took on a visit to Hong Kong Disneyland. On a hot summer day it is much more crowded than this–and good luck getting your own bottle of water through security!

WonderGround Gallery at Downtown Disney, Anaheim

NT_00007_38249

“Her Sleep” by artist J. Scott Campbell and Nei

The other day, while on business in SoCal, I had the good fortune of having a couple hours to burn in the Anaheim area.  So, I ran over to Downtown Disney to see if there was any new cards that might be available at any of the Disney owned shops or in the Disney Store itself.  The cards at the Disney Store remain the same as they were a month or so ago when I last visited…but I did drop into the WonderGround Gallery, a gallery for Disney affiliated artists to show, sign, and sell their work.

All told I picked up about 10 postcards in the shop…every thing they had, I think.  And there really is some neat stuff there.  One of my favorite cards is this one by J. Scott Campbell and Nei called “Her Sleep”.  Just a great rendition of the spell cast by Maleficent over Sleeping Beauty.  The card is numbered 00007 38249, but not on the card itself, only on the plastic wrapper.

If you find yourself in the area…definitely drop by.  There is bound to be something that will interest you, and they are always adding new work and even holding special events throughout the year.  Oh…and one last thing…say hello to Maria, she is a postcard fan and works at the shop!

Until next time…

The 100th Post! – Art of Pixar

Pizar_100_boxSo tonight I thought I would do something a little special for my 100th post (!!) on this blog.  Hard to believe the blog has been going for that long…but it has been a lot of fun and I am enjoying it.  So, no reason to stop!

A few years ago (2005), Chronicle Books published a set of 100 postcards (get it…100th post…100 postcards) to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Pixar Animation PIXAR_100_carsStudios. The set comes in a decorative box that could easily be stored on a book shelf.  The 100 cards cover all of the Pixar films up to the date the set was produced  in 2005 .  I have pulled out two that I liked to show you here.  Each card shows the artwork on the front (obviously) and a brief description on the back along with the artist responsible for the work.  The cards are all copyrighted Disney Enterprises Inc. and Pixar Animation Studios.  For the price (yes, they are still available at Chronicle Books) you just can’t beat what you get here.  Part of me wants to tape a bunch of these on the wall in my office, but then I kind of want to preserve the set.  They also have a Marvel comics set, and DC comics set.  Pretty tempting…

Pixar_100_incredChecklist Update

The latest updates to the functionality of the checklist tool have been made.  There are a couple minor things that just aren’t right…but they are minor.  Now that the functionality is mostly where I want it, I will be making design improvements real soon.  I have not been entering records lately…but that is going to change (significantly) real soon.  So stay tuned for more data in the checklist tool and let me know what you think.

Until next time…

Disneyland Hong Kong Postcard Sets

There is a lot to talk about tonight…so much, that I am going to have to spread the news across several installments.  Why so much to say?  Well, I have been fairly busy acquiring little lots of cards here and there over the past few weeks and some of them have started to show up in my mailbox, while others I have been able to buy in store at Wonderground in Downtown Disney at Disneyland.   (I had a meeting in the area today…and it ended early, so I had a little time to burn).

DHK_00400001622636Tonight though, I want to tell you about some Disneyland Hong Kong cards that just came in.  I found a dealer online who is based in Hong Kong, Global Postcard Sales, and got these sets from him.  I understand that there aren’t that many cards available from this park since people there don’t traditionally send a lot of post cards.  Never the less, there are cards to be had!

I purchased three sets from Global, two of which contain three cards, the other five.  The cards are all packaged in a plastic wrapper, and they are not individually numbered.  There is a number on the plastic wrapper though…so they can be identified as long as the wrapper stays with them.  So…if you want to add these cards to your collection, you can poke around eBay or try Global Postcard Sales.  There may be other dealers out there selling these online, but I wasn’t to able to find them.

Until next time… (which will be the 100th post on this blog (!!), so I have a cool set that I want to share with you!)

Checklist changes are live!

00100_46106

00100 46106 – Fantasmic! (just in case you were wondering)

Hello there!

The checklist tool changes I was talking about the other day are now live!  Thing is, you are seeing them at the same time I am, since I just asked the developer to load them straight onto the site.  Overall I think it turned out pretty well…but I will need to make a few minor tweaks over the next day or so.

So, what changed?

Grid/List View Option:  The main thing is the addition of a grid view for the cards.  This is a visual hobby, so while all the data is still there and still searchable, the grid view let’s you see the images as the primary point of reference.  I will be making two changes here though.  I will have the Grid/List view toggle made a little more intuitive.  Right now, if you want Grid View, click on the words “Grid View”.  When you are in Grid View, you will see a toggle for “List View” and the Grid View words will have disappeared.  I want to make this a little more obvious.  Secondly, I am going to have the Grid View default to eight rows by four columns.  I would love to hear from anyone out there who has trouble viewing this thing on their screen…I confess to having a reasonably wide monitor.

Recent Prices:  I made some minor changes to the price listing part of the tool.  Now, when a price is entered, no matter when it is entered, the list will be presented with the latest date of sale first followed by earlier dates.  It used to just order on the date that the record was entered.

A number of other changes were made to make the tool easier to use…for example, the NT# field is now case sensitive so NT0303A does not equal NT0303a…little things like that.  Let me know what you think.  I am already thinking of some other changes that might be needed!  After a while I will get serious about the look and feel of the tool.

Until next time…

Art Corner Oddity – NT0580 variant

NT0580_variants_0004Last night I was organizing some of my cards and came across this variant that I was not aware existed.  Variants of the Art Corner cards mostly have to do with the box for the stamp.  In some cards it is there, in others not.  But that’s it…all else is the same.  There is one Art Corner Card that is known to have a text variation on the back, but that’s NT0588, a Chip ‘n’ Dale card.  And that gets us to the cards shown here which have the same variation.

Here we see two versions of NT0580 (a great Donald Duck card by the way!)  The top example (postmarked in February, 1956) is manufactured from a different paper stock than the one on the NT0580_variants_0005bottom (postmarked in June, 1956); it’s not a glossy stock, but has more of a matte finish to it.  It also is narrower than the card below it by a little over an eighth on an inch.  But the most obvious difference is the text.

The text on the top, matte card says, “DISNEYLAND is a magic kingdom built on a 160 acre site in Anaheim, California.  This card was design by the Artists at the WALT DISNEY STUDIO to be sold exclusively by the ART CORNER at DISNEYLAND.”

The text on the lower, glossy card says, “DISNEYLAND is a magic kingdom built on a 160 acre site in Anaheim, California.  This card was design by the Artists at the WALT DISNEY STUDIO and distributed by the ART CORNER at DISNEYLAND.”

Why the difference?  Hard to say…but I think we can say with some level of certainty that the card manufactured by “Angeleno Photo Service” is older than the “Litho by Bob Plunkett” card.  Why?  Well, these were one and the same company (check out this link), with Angeleno Photo Service being renamed Bob Plunkett Color Press probably sometime in the late 1950’s.  The interesting part, though, is that in Ken Eslick’s last blog post, he shows a receipt for an order of Art Corner cards.  It is dated 1959, and the receipt is on Angeleno Photo Service header.

So…a pretty interesting rabbit trail on these cards.  Given this, I suspect that there are similar variants for the other Art Corner cards…anyone have an example you care to share?

Until next time…

Checklist Update etc.

Hi folks…I wanted to give you a quick update on the checklist to let you know where things are at the moment.

The good news is that school is ending soon and I am expecting to get some help in entering data into the database.  My goal is to have all of the Nickel Tour cards (all the ones that are actually in the book) entered by the end of July, maybe sooner.  Right now the database includes all cards through NT0459 (that’s through the E sereis cards).  I have also been entering images into the database…which is a little more time consuming.  But, like I have said before, when it is all said and done, it will be really cool to have a searchable database of the cards.

NT0640_ebay_smallSecond…I do have some changes coming to the database tool.  They should be live in the next week or so.  The key change is the addition of a “Grid View” of the cards.  There will also be a few other changes to make the database tool easier to use.

And now for the “etc.” part of the post.  Four Disneyland French cards sold on eBay this past week.  All of the cards sold for below $60..three of them below $50, so not far off from the ones that sold a couple months back.  These are rather rare…but, it seems the market isn’t interested in them above $60-$70…at least not this past week it wasn’t.  So…if you are interested in these cards, keep that in mind.

Until next time…

The Date-Niters and The “Advanced Collector”

date-niters_frontThe other night I was browsing through some of the Disney postcard related sales on eBay and came across an “Elliot Brothers” card showing the band playing at the Disneyland Date Nite.   What was most remarkable about this sale was the fact that the card was really rough, missing a significant chunk off one corner, and yet it managed to get $128 when all was said and date-niters_backdone.  The card did come from the personal estate of the trumpeter in the band, Cappy Lewis (pictured on the center of the card), who apparently worked for the Disney Studio for quite a while.

This got me thinking about a somewhat tangential topic.  Two terms that one often hears in collecting circles are “Advanced Collector” and “Important Collection”.  Today I wanted to give some brief thoughts on the first term:  “Advanced Collector”.

What makes someone an “advanced” collector??  I have to confess…this term usually makes me roll my eyes because too often it has everything to do with $$.  An “advanced” collector will shell out a million bucks for an Action Comics #1, or $50K for a first edition Hobbit, or whatever.  But that really isn’t it, is it?  An advanced collector, in my humble opinion, is someone who has significant historical and or encyclopedic knowledge about a specific hobby.  I certainly do not count myself as an advanced collector, but I have had the privelege to know a few, mostly in the comic book arena.  People who can site facts regarding the hobby that seem so obscure, and yet are important facts that are common knowledge to them.

In this hobby…clearly there are enough people out there who know enough about Disneyland postcards to realize that this Date-Niters card is really rare.  And so, they went after it.  In doing so, they educate the rest of us. Next time one shows up…whenever that will be…we can be ready!  And that really is one of the key purposes of this site…to educate and inform while conveying the fun of the hobby at the same time.  I hope you find that to be true!

Until next time…

Le Grand Courtyard – Then and Now

NT0803One of the things that I think so many people like about Disneyland is that it doesn’t really change that much.  Sure..it does change, they have the cranes erected over Thunder Mountain as we speak.  But, there is still a constancy to it.  The buildings on Main Street, the canal boats in Fantasyland, the castle…you get the idea.

When I was at the park this past April, I decided to take a couple of “Then and Now” shots and compare them.  I featured one of these comparisons (looking down Main Street) in a post not too long ago.  Today I have a comparison of Le Grand Courtyard, from the late 1960’s when the post card photo was taken…and 2013.

As you can see…not a whole lot has NT0803_nowchanged in the courtyard since the day it was completed.  But there are a few things to note.  Some of the paint colors have been altered, most notably in that inset cupola in the back.  The walls are yellow now…as opposed to a more grayish blue from before (sorry if that isn’t quite right, I am a little color blind!).  And of course the lady with the beehive isn’t there today and no flowers are for sale!

Next time you are in the park…bring some cards along and see if you can get any good then and now shots.  I would be happy to share them.

Until next time…

Art Corner Uncut Sheet

Hey there.  I’m one of the new contributors Todd mentioned in an earlier post, and I thought I would start off with something fairly unique – perhaps even one-of-a-kind!

The Art Corner at Disneyland was gone long before I first stepped foot in the park, but I’ve always enjoyed collecting the Art Corner postcards. The artwork is great and, probably more importantly, it’s possible to put together a full set, given the relatively small number of different postcards that comprise a set. But without a doubt the pride and joy of my Art Corner collection (and perhaps my entire collection) is an uncut sheet of Art Corner postcards that I purchased from the estate of Bruce Gordon after he passed away.

IMG_2880

It’s rather interesting – 9 total postcards with 3 different designs (or 4 if you count the two Tinkerbell variations).  And although they are all vertical, the Tinkerbells are upside-down for whatever reason.  However, taking a look at the back of the sheet we see that the backs of the postcards have all been printed with the same orientation:

IMG_2881

As a result, when cut some of these postcards will appear to have been printed “upside-down” relative to the other postcards on the sheet.  This explains why it’s not always easy to get your collection looking nice and neat and consistently organized in your albums!

On another note, I think Todd is doing a great job with the checklist and the blog in general, and I’m happy to have been invited to be a part of this!  I look forward to contributing additional posts now and again highlighting some of the more interesting postcards Disneyland had to offer.

Until next time…
