\u00a0I hope you enjoy this stuff as much as I do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Walt Disney&#8217;s Comics and Stories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/WDCS_16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2107\" alt=\"WDCS_16\" src=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/WDCS_16.jpg\" width=\"265\" height=\"358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/WDCS_16.jpg 472w, https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/WDCS_16-221x300.jpg 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><em>Walt Disney&#8217;s Comics and Stories<\/em> began publication in 1940. \u00a0At first it reprinted\u00a0Silly Symphonies Sunday\u00a0newspaper comics as well as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse daily strip comics\u00a0. \u00a0Most of this work was originally done by Al Taliaferro, Ted Osborne and Floyd Gottfredson, but other artists were involved as well. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t until issue 24 that the title included original work. \u00a0Issue 31 (1943) saw the first Carl Barks art work. \u00a0Barks went on to become the most celebrated and famous of all the Disney comic book artists, working on hundreds of stories through the mid 1960&#8217;s. \u00a0The early issues of the title contain all kinds of great featurettes: Minnies Hollywood Chatter, the afore mentioned Silly Symphony comics and text stories based on Silly Symphony films, a puzzle page, and of course the great comics from Walt Disney Studios.<\/p>\n<p>Shown here is issue 16 (Vol.2 No.4) \u00a0The artist for this fantastic cover is not known for sure, but it is likely Al Taliaferro. \u00a0It has a great feature length Three Little Pigs story, a Dumbo text story, Pluto strip comics, and Donald and Mickey as we would expect. \u00a0These early books from the Golden Age of comics were 64 pages&#8230;so they packed a punch! \u00a0If all this sounds interesting&#8230;check out these\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=WDCS&amp;icep_uq=Walt+Disney%27s+Comics+and+Stories&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=1&amp;icep_catId=66&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\">Walt Disney&#8217;s Comics and Stories<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=9&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=WDCS&amp;uq=Walt+Disney%27s+Comics+and+Stories&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" \/> for yourself and start a collection today!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Le Journal de Mickey from France<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0058.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-2123\" alt=\"DSC_0058\" src=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0058-708x1024.jpg\" width=\"314\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0058-708x1024.jpg 708w, https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0058-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/sundrycollectibles.net\/disneypostcards\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/DSC_0058.jpg 886w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/a>Since the early days of the Disney company, the studio actively sought out ways to expand the brand. \u00a0In the US, a tremendous push was made to manufacture and sell promotional items of every imaginable kind. \u00a0(The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco has a great selection of these early items). \u00a0But Walt and Roy also sent Mickey and the crew over-seas to Europe. \u00a0<em>Le Journal de Mickey<\/em>, which was first published in 1934 only six years after Mickeys creation, is evidence of this push.<\/p>\n<p>The French and Belgain markets would have been ripe for this sort of thing. \u00a0At the time, cartoon characters such as Herge&#8217;s Tintin and Quick and Flupke were already in full swing. \u00a0Today, outside of the US, France has one of the most active comic book, or <em>bandes desin\u00e9es<\/em>, markets on the planet (the other that comes to mind is Japan). \u00a0As far as the art work in these publications, I suspect that most of it was produced in the US and captions were added by European staff.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of the magazine I show here is from 1938. \u00a0Notice the early image of Donald Duck with a longer bill than he ultimately had. \u00a0The first appearance of Donald in a US based comic publication was in 1934. \u00a0This was an adaptation of the <em>Wise Little Hen<\/em> Silly Symphony story. \u00a0Getting a copy of any of these very early comics will not be cheap&#8230;but these relatively early <em>Journal de Mickey<\/em>\u00a0comics are easy to find and very reasonably priced (usually less than $10). \u00a0Of course, it helps if you are in France!<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in finding copies of <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/709-53476-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=Journal+de+Mickey&amp;icep_uq=Journal+de+Mickey&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=77867&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229480&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\">Le Journal de Mickey<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/709-53476-19255-0\/1?ff3=9&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=Journal+de+Mickey&amp;uq=Journal+de+Mickey&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" \/>, I recommend going directly to <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/709-53476-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=1&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=ebay.fr&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229480&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\">ebay.fr<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/709-53476-19255-0\/1?ff3=1&amp;pub=5575059682&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337396584&amp;customid=ebay.fr&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" \/>.
